Today (1 September) unions welcomed Network Rail being taken back under public ownership by gathering outside its offices near Kings Cross and handing in a letter to Chief Executive Mark Carne.

We believe this change supports our view that the railways are a public service dependent on public subsidy, and therefore should be under public ownership, rather than subsidies and fares being put towards company profits and shareholder dividends under privatisation.

This move should represent the first step in taking the railways back under public ownership.
